Adoption Awareness Coalition Learning Community: Success for Children Exposed to Drugs and Alcohol

Participants at this quarterly workshop for professionals and foster or adoptive parents will learn from medical professionals the characteristics of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), and the effects of in-utero drug exposure and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) on children. Participants will also gain an awareness of parenting and school strategies for children who have effects of drug or alcohol exposure.

Presenter Bios
Denise Bothe, MD is a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. She has been on faculty since 2008 after completing her fellowship in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics. Prior to the fellowship she worked with Lake Hospital System in Lake County, Ohio as a General Pediatrician. Denise has special interests in management of ADHD, Learning Disorders, Anxiety and stress management, International and Domestic Adoption, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, and Global Health. She is Director of the Adoption Clinic and the FASD clinic at Rainbow. Denise is also Director of the Global Health Program in the Pediatric Residency Program at Rainbow. In addition to regular teaching of pediatric residents, Denise also teaches in courses and workshops on the special needs of children in disasters, especially psychological issues.

Rachel Tangen, PhD is a board certified pediatric neuropsychologist at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. After completing her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Houston and a fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at the Children's Hospital in New Orleans, she joined the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital faculty in 2006. Clinically, her work focuses on conducting neuropsychology evaluations, which include evaluation of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning, for children with a range of developmental, neurological, and learning disorders. She is Co-director of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Clinic. Her research interests include cognitive and functional outcomes of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, cochlear implantation, pediatric epilepsy, and genetic syndromes.

Kimberly Burkhart, PhD is a clinical psychologist in the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics & Psychology at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. Dr. Burkhart completed her training at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She specializes in providing behavioral/cognitive-behavioral therapy for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders. She is also trained in interventions to assist parents with managing disruptive behavior and improving parent-child interaction. She has several publications in the areas of violence prevention and intervention and parent training.

Felicia Fago, PhD, ME, BS Education is the retired Educational Services Director at Positive Education Program (PEP) in Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout her career, she has been an advocate for children with special needs, and continues to advocate and develop programming for children with cognitive, social-emotional, and behavioral disorders. Dr. Fago completed her doctoral studies at Case Western Reserve University, with a focus on outcomes for children with prenatal alcohol exposure and traumatization. She has worked in partnership with the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and has spoken nationally and internationally about prenatal alcohol exposure, as well as the issues of children who have been institutionalized. Dr. Fago has two daughters who are adopted, one of whom has fetal alcohol syndrome.

Therese Dragga, BSN, RN-BC graduated from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and has worked at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio for more than 35 years. During that time, she has cared for premature infants, refugees, internationally and domestically adopted children, and children with behavioral issues and/or developmental delays. She currently provides nursing support to Rainbow's Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics/Psychology where she coordinates three focused clinics: the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) clinic, the Attention and Behavior Comprehensive (ABC) clinic, and the Adoption Health Service.
